Freelance Whales
Generator Chess Club 7”

Article written by Ged M - Mar 3, 2010

A New York band burning up the blogosphere at present, they’re former buskers who have a nice line in junkshop folk music that melds banjos and synths. There’s now an iTunes album, ‘Weathervanes’ but Chess Club are promoting them in the UK with a traditional vinyl biscuit, and very fine it is too. ‘Generator First Floor’ is a good start, fully of layered, atmospheric folky pleasure that weirdly cuts out just as you expect it to fly. However, that’s just because it heralds the very catchy ‘Generator Second Floor’, with its array of instruments (including glockenspiel, vintage synths, harmonium and waterphone) sounding very like Sufjan Stevens. This is an accomplished-sounding single and although they might be the ones busking for change, it will be us who are begging to hear more.
