Singles roundup

Fungi Girls are a three-piece from Cleburne, Texas whose ‘Turquoise Hotel’ (HoZac 7”), has Duane Eddy-ish rumbling rhythms with a Flying Nun-style lo-fi simplicity. On the flipside, ‘Doldrums’ is a tale of small town boredom with a consistently compulsive guitar riff and a generous helping of JAMC distortion. It’s a tasty blend of the psych-rock, garage-pop and general chaos for which music from the Lone Star State is renowned. Myspace

From a band jointly located in Los Angeles and Montreal, No Joy's 'No Summer' (Mexican Summer 7") is woozy shoegaze, with a feel of the hottest days of August when the air itself seems to sweat and walking feels more like swimming. The single has an accumulated density of sound, and dreamy female vocals, that sends you swooning, with only the more agitated guitars of the chorus rousing you from a delicious stupor. The flipside, ‘No Joy’, is a soar-fest of clattering guitars, in an early Sonic Youth style. Highly recommended and brilliantly memorable. Myspace

Junkboy’s ‘Friends Part 2’ (Enraptured Records, digital download) is Brian Wilson-influenced sunshine pop and, as homage, works really well. With elegant orchestral touches, sweet boy/girl vocals and a tinge of melancholy (perhaps a result of Mik and Rich Hanscomb having to live next to Brighton rather than Venice Beach), its warmth with a hint of chill encapsulates the British summer. Excellent for your summer playlist. Myspace

Also right for summer is ‘The Beach’ by The Superimposers (Wonderfulsound Records, cd single and digital download). This is more of a chilled-out, après-sun record, light and floaty with a soulful sheen to its sunshine pop. It might not work at the end of the season but it’s fine as long as the sun’s cooking and the beer’s frosty. Myspace

Brilliant Colors’ ‘Walk Into the World’ (Germs of Youth Records 7”) sounds like it should have been released on the original Rough Trade Records; the clattery guitar and speeding rhythms are firmly post-punk, sounding like The Raincoats of old. It’s poppy with a gritty aftertaste, but it doesn’t stand out in its own right.

Seeland’s ‘Local Park’ (LoAF Recordings, CD single and download, out 2 August) is catchy, summary electronic pop. For all its whizzes and beeps, it owes a lot to the Kinks in its melodies and sense of wistful nostalgia. The press release claims it’s the audio equivalent of strawberries and cream but it’s more like Zoom lollies and bottles of cream soda. A futuristic retro-pop success. Myspace
