I liked the Spectorish wall-of-sound effects and impassioned vocals of ‘Daddy’s Gone’. However, this follow up single suggests that they’re a one-trick pony, and if you don’t believe that just listen to the B-side of this single, a gruesome noise-rock remake of ‘Be My Baby’, for proof. Do we need an indie Ronettes fronted by some tear-smeared greaser? It’s one thing to be inspired, another to take the piss and Glasvegas overstep the mark with this caterwauling, over-wrought musical melodrama. When you’re able to make out what James Allen is singing, you realise it’s more of his miserable childhood: “I feel so guilty about the things I said to my ma when I was 10 year old”. Add to that a band that makes a lumpen effort at trying to recreate that 60s fuzz-guitar sound and you’re left massively unimpressed. Alan McGee rates them; we should have known.
