Hasn’t young Outspan done well? He’s gone from a part in the Commitments to starring in the low-budget Once with Marketa Irglova, with whom he won this year’s Oscar for best song from a movie. This is epic and maudlin, with a huge swelling chorus, and would have been described as ‘cinematic’ even without the movie. It’s perfect for Damian Rice fans, and its natural home is Jools Holland’s programme, where unsurprisingly they appeared last week. There’s a video on the enhanced CD that puts the song into its proper movie context.
