God Help The Girl
Baby You’re Blind Rough Trade

Article written by Paul M - Jun 1, 2010

Stuart Murdoch flips open his little black contact book and purrs… Yesssshhhh, Linnea Jonsson of Those Dancing Days, the girl with the curly mop topped hair of a brunette Temple and the gravel-like voice of a white Bassey… Yesssshhh, schhhhhplendid…. Or he would if he was a Bond villain or a lizard.

So Jonsson duly becomes the latest attractive and talented female to get the call and guest on a God Help The Girl single. A young Swede whose sultry warble could make even my withered extremities stir adds her effortless sizzle to a funky 70s beat to deliver the raunchy soundtrack to a quiet night in for me and my perversions. Far less self-conscious than anything on last year’s album, it presumably has nothing to do with the film soundtrack Murdoch has planned. The flipside is a slightly pacier take of gorgeous album closer A Down and Dusky Blonde which is neither better nor worse than the original, just different.
