Grant-Lee Phillips, erstwhile founding member of alt-country heroes Grant Lee Buffalo is back with his first original material since 2004's acclaimed Virginia Creeper LP. The formula hasn't changed much, if at all, with Phillip's wearied croon delivering his wry lyrics and subtle melodies perfectly. The rustic ambience of the drums and rhythm guitars propel the song along on a wave of melancholy that sees Philips do what Philips does best; telling humane tales of folks that could be you, me, or the man next door.
His worldly view yet personal lyrics and ably supported by sprinklings of piano and brass. Taken from the album 'Strangelet', and released in promotion for his forthcoming solo mini-European tour, 'Soft Asylum' isn’t going to crash into the charts, though it may crash into a few hearts.
