It is well known that one thing bands do not like is lazy music hacks pigeonholing their music with either a cliché or a rather nonsensical pseudo-explanatory term. Your “twees” or your “mathcores” for instance… Herzoga carefully sidestep this by giving us a rather daft descriptive of their own sound as “wrongpop” which, on this evidence, kind of gives you the impression they’re keen on being deliberately obtuse as opposed to crafting something people would actually want to listen to. Herzoga are all funky walking basslines and jerky guitars that, quite frankly, is rather commonplace in this day and age and it is far from “wrong” to today’s audience to openly have Pavement and Wire as influences. This musical backing, whilst nothing spectacularly interesting, could actually provide a decent foil for a strong tale told over the top but with dull vocals and the lack of tight lyrical themes the whole thing falls rather flat. As no doubt passionate about music as this lot are, sadly this second single of theirs is only “wrong” in the sense that songs contained on it simply are not up to scratch.
