So, what we have here are remixes (the first by James Rutledge, the second by Ricardo Tobar) of two My Bloody Valentine covers by ‘Athens, Georgia based instrumental post-rockers’ Japancakes. Japancakes covered the entire MBV ‘Loveless’ album last year, pedal steel in hand. Or foot. And here are reworkings of two of the tracks.
The first, ‘Soon’, sounds like the soundtrack to a day in the life of an assembly line, yet still embraces the textures for which MBV were famed. Somewhat messily, however, and is one for collectors, methinks. The second, ‘Touched’, works the oracle. Colm O’Ciosoig’s 56 second piece of work is transformed into something quite different. A louche, lounging 6 minutes plus of Ibizan goodness. Remixes of covers. Pointless? Maybe, but enjoyable nevertheless.
