Keel Her
Prize Catch Critical Heights 7”

Article written by Ged M - Jul 30, 2012

There’s a line of poetry that I still remember from my Latin homework: “as I saw/ so I fell”. The audio equivalent of that feeling occurs when you first hear the four-track EP from Keel Her, a.k.a. Rose Keeler-Schäffeler from Winchester. Keel Her’s experimental bedroom pop is super-lo-fi, barely recorded and ultra distorted but also insanely catchy. Who does she sound like? In the wonderful haze-fest ‘Robert’, she declares “I wanna be R Stevie Moore” and, as well as the godfather of home-recorded outsider music, you can hear the wooze-pop of Wavves and maybe the Vivian Girls if you were hearing them on an ultra-degraded cheap cassette. It’s hard to make out the lyrics in the fuzz but the mantra “I wish you’d take me out” on the brilliant ‘Pop Hurl’ is compelling. In fact, every track is a peach, from the blurry dark fuzzpop of the title track to the mechanical rhythms and messed up pop of ‘Agitated’. Her music might be shaped from balls of hiss and fuzz but she teases those simple elements into vivid and addictive pop songs - a leftfield revelation.
