Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds
Conjure Man In The Red 7”

Article written by Ged M - Feb 27, 2013

Mr Powers always looks preternaturally unlined in photos, as if he'd signed some pact to preserve his rakish charm forever, and his records have the same sense that he’s channelling magikal forces. ‘Conjure Man’ is elemental rock’n’roll with a sinister blues rhythm, reminding you of his time in the Cramps and the Bad Seeds but above all sounding like the Rolling Stones if they really were as satanic as they once wanted to be. Congo and the 'Birds keep the same voodoo tingle on their cover of the Seeds’ ‘Lose Your Mind’, with its druggy Bo Diddley rhythm and spooky request: “tell me baby, is it coming ahn?” As ever, Kid Congo puts a spell on you.
