Lupen Crook: World's End
I always thought Lupen Crook was the equivalent of Pete Doherty's older brother: better looking, more gifted, better record collection. And when Pete D fell for the myth of junkie cool, I thought Lupen Crook might take on the mantle of callow young English romantic poet-troubadour. In the past he’s been both bang on target and occasionally incoherent but he's all at sea on his latest single. The confessional tale of a reformed hedonist, 'World's End' has its moments (principally the alt.country chorus) but is too mawkish otherwise. He tries too hard to be bad on 'Devil's Son' and it's just empty bombast, while the guitars make the sort of cliched rock'n'roll noise for which terrible bands like Dirty Pretty Things have been cast into hell (maybe "legendary remixer" Howie B might have something to do with the blanding out). Lupen gives his address as "Dysunited Kingdom" and, as a fan of his, I'm dysappointed, dyscontent and dystraught.
