Mazes/ Eagulls

Manchester’s Mazes and Leeds’ ace newcomers Eagulls pay tribute to the Wipers on a new EP that mixes a Wipers cover plus an original from each band. There’s clearly a link between the bands, sharing a love of that melodic, guitar-based 90s alt-rock sound. Mazes celebrate the awesome Portland punk band with the full-on ‘Messenger’ while their own ‘Farewell Summer’ is catchy guitar pop, wherein the instruments jangle and resound like a modern day ‘Peter Gunn’. Eagulls are claimed by the spirit of the Wipers on their own snarling, clattering ‘Possessed’, and then cover the Wipers’ ‘Mystery’ (from the incredible Is This Real album) as hooky punk-pop. Greg Sage would be stoked that both bands have captured the essence of his fine band but that they also carry on their attitude.
