Common Burn Rhymes Of An Hour Records 7”

The first new Mazzy Star music since 1996, released on their own label, this grips you as soon as Hope Sandoval’s distinctive drawl emerges over David Roback’s gently buzzing guitar. It’s vibrant and alive, groaning with goodness, as it embellishes itself over its fuzzy five minute running time with muted harmonica and hint of glockenspiel. 'Lay Myself Down' is fervid desert Americana with elegant Lee Hazlewood-like arrangements, splashed with cool pedal steel and surmounted by Sandoval at her most reserved and otherworldly. It's not a million miles from where they left off with Among My Swan, and the same enigmatic aloofness remains for the band as a whole (note how this single just drifted out, barely heralded, on gorgeous clear blue vinyl), but it's a fabulous return to the old form and sets excited thoughts racing about the new MS album.
