Odd Box Singles Club: Part 2 Odd Box Records

The second triad of singles in the Odd Box singles club comes without part 1's fancy fripperies but is chocka with quality. If these tracks had been released on a compilation album, you’d be spilling Ribena down your top in sheer delight. It’s not fair to single anyone out so let’s use alphabetical order: Bracelettes are three London-based Japanese girls playing punky Ramones rhythms in frantic, feisty, no-quarter-given style. Breathless pace, breathtaking effect. Gold-Bears from Atlanta, Georgia produce fuzzy, C86-inflected indiepop with killer melodies. They've got some history (a Slumberland album and a Cloudberry single) which makes them capable, with ‘Bedroom’, of shoehorning a huge dollop of pop goodness into an 86 second single!

The Hairs are Kevin and Alex (Naidoo, from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart). ‘Feeling A Lot of Feelings’ is short but gloriously optimistic sunshine pop with defiant killer chorus - "not the sucker that you think I am" - while ‘Hey Hitler’ is 87 seconds full of huge sweeps of swoonsome pop gold (if you like Pete and the Pirates, you'll love this). The Ketamines hail from Alberta, Canada and include members of the excellent Myelin Sheaths and Fist City. ‘A Rotten Bond’ is dark and spooky garage rock with a brilliant menacing organ sound (shades of the early Horrors without a trip to the Boots' mascara counter) while '1 Yr' conjures up images of Alice Cooper and a zombified Count 5. Our old friends The Medusa Snare from Leeds only get one song but ‘I See You Look The Other Way’ is great galloping punk-pop with a memorable chorus – “the radio is not the only thing that failed us” – that hypnotises you like a snake. Last but not least are The Vignettes from Minneapolis, MN, two sparky girls called Francis and Freddi who play screechy, scratchy r'n'r with minimum fidelity and maximum Riot Grrl attitude. Bracing!

I love the Hairs and Ketamines but really it's gold stars all round and a strong recommendation to acquire all 3 releases as these are even better than the pretty decent Part 1.
