Of Montreal
Back to School / Subtext Read, Nothing New Polyvinyl 7"

Article written by Paul M - Apr 30, 2010

Of Montreal
Of Montreal
I pity the poor obsessive sap who's interest in Of Montreal stretches to buying every item they produce but if he's got the many prints, T-shirts, badges, lanterns and vinyl releases (all highly limited and therefore expensive obviously) then he probably found himself queueing up a couple of Saturdays ago outside one of the few remaining independent record shops to purchase this as part of Record Store Day. And it would be a 'he', clearly. I should know, I was that sap (ok I've drawn the line at the lantern).

There's a slight whiff of an artist disappearing up his own jacksy about some of the stuff Kevin Barnes is now putting out in the name of art/merchandise/music. Both tracks here are languid, woozy vehicles for Barnes to gargle along to. Subtext Read, Nothing New has a 70s Bowie and Eno synth feel but with mournful lyrics and Back to School (a Royal Trux cover) is more like a sleazy honky tonk Stones, that starts interestingly before chuntering on way past its chucking off time. Unfortunately it is also just an old 2007 tour release that presumably the label hadn't originally sold out. Barnes is still an amazing live performer. Mesmerising, in fact. This is average though.
