Passion Pit
Chunk of Change EP French Kiss

Article written by Paul M - Feb 15, 2009

Boston's Passion Pit have featured in a lot of people's lists for ones to watch out for in 2009, including a ninth place in the BBC's poll. For the first four of the six tracks here, I suffer their 80s synth pop cheesy casio melodies, irritating poo-pooping drum machine percussion and muffled high pitched vocals that seem to have been bolted on separately during a particularly drunken karaoke session, and wonder whether I'm completely out of step with this industry. I nearly give up. The review's written and I've dismissed them out of hand as a bunch of overhyped chancers. And then the appropriately named Better Things kicks in at track five and its Of Montreal remixed by Hot Chip quirky disco grabs me before the sucker punch of final offering Sleepyhead, an MGMT style sample fest with kooky oriental harmonies, beats me into submission. Worryingly these two splendid tracks have already been released once as a double A sided 7", which may suggest that their future is not quite as rosey as their past.
