Pocketbooks are the archetypal twee band. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as there are two types of twee-pop: twee type one is the shallow and shambolic pisstaking sort, exemplified by the Bobby McGees, the type that would have Gandhi reaching for his nail-studded baseball bat. Fortunately this EP fits into twee type two: melodic pop and dreamy beats, full of alternating boy/girl vocals, jangly guitars, and references to young love, library cards and the Actionettes. Belle and Sebastian are the obvious influences, especially on the jaunty ‘Falling Leaves’ with its witty lyrics and Monopoly metaphors, while ‘Don’t Stop’ stirs a little 60s Motown into the mix. It’s naïve and sugary pop religiously faithful to the spirit of C-86.
