singles roundup

Princeton’s ‘Shout It Out’ is baroque pop with a slightly exotic tang, carrying echoes of Jens Lekman and Jonathan Richman in the careworn vocals. It’s immediate and catchy but with less Californian sunshine than what you’d expect from a band named after the street in Santa Monica that twins Jesse and Matt Kivel grew up on. ‘Moonbeams’ is stranger still, a melodic core wrapped in layers of handclaps and Brazilian dance rhythms. It’s curious, idiosyncratic and worth exploring further. Myspace

On the evidence of their debut disc ‘Becoming A Jackal’ (Domino 7”) Villagers are going to be worth following. The A-side sounds very like Arthur Lee and Love, its poetic, scary imagery counterpointed by warm, graceful arrangements. On the more folk-pop ‘Twenty Seven Strangers’, Conor J O’Brien sounds a little like an emotive Conor Oberst, and adds lovely decoration to the song, from little trills of tinkling piano to otherworldly backing vocals. Definitely ones to watch. Myspace

Not looking like any of them were ever alive in the 80s, Norwich’s Blighters have revived the sound of early 80s pop-indie crossovers. Play ‘Heartbeat’ (Hungry Audio 7” and download) and think first album Orange Juice, think Spandau Ballet, think Duran Duran trying to be Chic-funky. And on ‘Don’t Want Nothing’, hear the white reggae sound lifted from the Police. None of which convinces me I want to hear them ever again. Myspace

The title track of Lost Idol's 'Lightwerk EP' (Cookshop Records) pays tribute to the gods of Krautrock in a warm and golden way. It has groove and melodies, stacking layers of swirling analogue synths atop that insistent motorik beat in a most compelling way. 'Beesmouth' is a denser, more dance-driven mesh of beats and synths, paying homage to some notorious Brighton boozer, while there are dancefloor friendly remixes of both on the EP (which comes in CD and download formats). 'Lightwerk' is electronic music with a heart. Myspace

West London’s Limozine make straightforwardly primitive punky rock’n’roll. The primal kick of ‘Mutiny Girl’ (Open Plan Records) shows that they’ve sold their souls to the Ramones and Stooges, while ‘She Rocka Rolla’ has dumb lyrics but a great guitar riff. The record could be louder and more deranged though, which is probably less of a problem live. Myspace

Tim Perry? Isn’t he the man behind Brixton’s best venue? Nah, the Tim Perry here is from Denver, Colorado and is the mind behind Weed Diamond whose ‘Snowmelt’ (Transparent 7”) is a Wavves-like display of echoey, lo-fi pop slightly skewed off its axis and driven by a pounding beat that could be Battles-quality. But I prefer ‘Oklahoma’, a spiky little pop song with a neat melody and an audacious guitar riff that rattles round your brain. Myspace
