R.Ring
Rise EP Mass Market Recordings

Article written by Ged M - Feb 5, 2013

The unexpected gift is always the most welcome. From a Dutch label comes a new record from Mike Montgomery and Kelley Deal, available for a limited time only and insanely desirable. It kicks off with an experimental amuse bouche and then launches into a haunting set of songs. ‘Rumine’ is stark and spooky, not least Kellie’s savage line “I am cruel/ but I don’t care” while ‘Unwind’ is eerie and edgy, combining woozy keyboards and Kellie’s spectral voice with a guitar that starts spiky and balloons up to steamroller size. However, the Mike-voiced ‘You Belong To The Steam’ is the EP’s highlight, a sad and ineffably tender tale - “you live here like a ghost/ I feel but never see” – that has an unforgettable delicate, chiming accompaniment. Another set of songs that continue to resonate long after the tune is over.
