Smile For No One Sonic Cathedral

If the theme of the Get Well Soon album (Sarabeth Tucek’s reaction to her father’s death) was heavy going, a single lifted from it is going to be a weighty serving of grief and loss. It’s a countrified lament and, though meant to be one of the album’s lighter moments (there’s a “homage to Cat Stevens” in the piano playing), it feels like attending a wake in an old parlour behind thick winter curtains on a hot summer’s day. I’ve liked her plainspeaking and humorous voice in the past but this is a little too personal and intense.
