|Sgt Buzfuz is up to the third instalment of his partwork of popes. Now it's the 11th and 12th centuries and we get a lesson on pontifical politics and clerical celibacy set to a swinging Dexys beat. A tale of whoring, hypocrisy and the abuse of power, it's innovative, engaging and a neat entry in the lo-fi folk/history genre. On the B-side, ‘Dentist to the Stars’ there's a clanging dulcimer that drones sinisterly in a tale of a murderous gob-monkey who dreams of suffocating his celebrity patients. Like the Soft Boys, this is unselfconsciously smart-pop, with a noir-psychedelic twist.
