Devastating Bones Fortuna Pop!/ WIAIWYA 7”/ download

Shrag’s evolution from shouty-pop indieband continues apace, as the latest single from third album Canines proves. ‘Devastating Bones’ is an excitable glam-rock air-puncher, heavy on the big Slade beat, accompanying Helen King’s lustful lyrics that spell out her dishonourable intentions in a hymn to physicality. It’s an arousing invitation to get sweaty and we should all join in. ‘Broken Glass and Fingernails’, by comparison, is a swelling sturm-und-drang emotional epic with orchestrated arrangements and sounding like it’s been lifted from the same page as album closer ‘Flinching At Forever’. The leaps of quality from record to record make the term “indiepop” too simple and restrictive to define them now.
