Smith Westerns / Magic Kids: split single

Marc Bolan may now just be a footnote in the Highway Code’s ‘how not to drive’ pages but the Smith Westerns are keeping the spirit of glam rock alive on ‘Imagine Pt 3’ (Fat Possum 7”). It keeps flipping between cuddly lo-fi pop and then blasts of T-Rexy guitar bliss, making you want to break out the face paint and feather boas. The other side of the split single is by the Magic Kids. ‘Superball’ is a love song to a childhood toy, full of bubbly keyboard rhythms, string effects and Beach Boys’ harmonies. Sweet and summery but naturally suffers from comparison with the genius of ‘Hey Boy’.
