Spectrum with Tim ‘Love’ Lee/ Captain Memphis
Singles on the Great Pop Supplement are always impressively packaged. Spectrum’s new picture disc is a case in point, its strobing design adding to the psychedelic effect of the record. On one side Pete Kember colludes with superstar-DJ Tim ‘Love’ Lee on ‘Words May Shatter’, a wail of dance-influenced noise-rock where beats and synth waves collide, sounding like Suicide or the Chemical Bros on mindwarping psychotropics. Not bad then, but better still is the other side where Spectrum and Captain Memphis (i.e. legendary and now dead musician/ producer Jim Dickinson) tell the story of the suicide of one of the original r’n’b stars on Christmas Day 1954 in ‘The Lonesome Death of Johnny Ace’. It’s partly a lament, partly a ghost story, full of oscilating synths over swamp-rock rhythms, with Kember bringing the eerie backing and Dickinson providing the amazing gruff Southern voice. It’s a breathtaking medley of styles that works perfectly.
