Suzi Chunk
Look Back & Laugh/Tripwire State Records

Article written by Kev W - Apr 11, 2012

This is the first record bearing the name Suzi Chunk, but the Teesside vocalist (or self-styled "singist") has graced plenty of stages in the past and this experience and confidence is plastered all over the two tracks on this 7". She may not be a shrinking violet, but neither is she overbearing, giving it just enough instead of forcing the issue. This approach is the ideal foil for this pair of simple-but-catchy 60s-style beat numbers, originally recorded by revivalists The Kravin' A's for their 1991 album Krave On.

These songs were penned by Glenn Prangnell whose current band Groovy Uncle provide reassuringly authentic backing here. The earworm melody of 'Look Back & Laugh' is given a more soulful slant than the original pure garage version, and the bluesy 'Tripwire' is perfect jukebox material, coming in at just under two minutes, sounding as vintage as Dansette and seemingly engineered to be played on one. Short, sharp, snappy, tidy and eloquent. Any mod worth their salt should be all over this.
