Origins Forest Family Records 7”

The sea-blue vinyl is the only connection with the oceans that inspired the band’s early releases – which were, in turn, a couple of promising singles and a very patchy debut album. But the Patrick Carney-produced second album on Fat Possum may turn out to be everything that the first record wasn’t on the strength of the initial single from the album. ‘Origins’ has a great distorted keyboard riff, nimble guitar and insistently rhythmic drumming which, when added to Alaina Moore’s wistful voice, makes for an effortlessly catchy tune. The swirly keyboard effects and sinisterly suggestive lyrics on the darker ‘Deep In The Woods’ are definitely worth a hearing too. It's always been possible that Tennis might step too far over the line into early 60s pop tweeness but this new material is addictively repeatable and has a sharper edge that keeps you listening.
