The Blanche Hudson Weekend
Deep Thrust EP Odd Box Records

Article written by Ged M - Dec 12, 2012

They don’t stand still, this band. Since the demise of the Manhattan Love Suicides, Darren and Caroline have penned buzzy fuzzpop, girl-group bubblegum pop and Spacemen 3-esque dronerock. Their latest EP is full of 80s-inspired electronic pop, at times reminiscent of, err, Electronic. ‘Consume Me’ has an edge of paranoia as Caroline intones “the way you’re judging me, so very unnerving” in the style of an angry android who’s just discovered the concept of homicide. ‘Consume Me’ is clean and synth-wavey but holds a place for the electric guitar right at the end and ‘Some Kind of Freedom’ is glitchy and scratchy, as if Caroline’s voice is being channelled through a medium in a séance. Once you’re over the initial sound surprise, their unpredictability becomes a real strength, along with the brilliant B-movie cover.
