The Chemistry Set
Come Kiss Me Vibrate and Smile Fruits de Mer Records 7”

Article written by Ged M - Oct 7, 2012

chemistry_set.jpg
A much-lauded (by Peel and Tony Wilson) element of the late 80s psychedelic revival sponsored by the legendary Imaginary Records in Manchester, The Chemistry Set split in 1991 but reformed 17 years later and started playing again in 2011. Their latest single on the vinyl-only Fruits de Mer label recaptures that sound of 80s-reviving-60s; ‘Come Kiss Me Vibrate and Smile’ is a mouthful of a title but the song itself is elegant and insistent candy-coated psych-pop, while ‘Time to Breathe’ is six minutes of swirly psych-rock. The bonus track is their version of Tomorrow’s ‘Hallucinations’, where they up-jangle the 1968 original and beef up the chorus so it’s even more darned catchy. This is the retro sound that just keeps giving, the incarnation of a new ‘new psychedelic movement’.
