The Exhibition - The Crown/Coma
The two sides of this single both show The Exhibition to be be more-than-decent purveyors of moody northern indie-rock. There's plenty doing this sort of thing of course, but what makes the Exhibition recall the 80s wellspring rather than some of their more inexplicably popular contemporaries is their restraint. Where a more XfM band would go for the big emotional punch and bore the arse off you* The Exhibition hold back to good effect.

You could ask 'em to cheer up a bit, but they're from Barnsley, so probably best that they stick to slightly gloomy introspection. They're good at it.



*You know what I mean: the big, Snow Patrol virtual-faglighter chorus, apparently designed to set off the lager tears in the sort of blokes-together halfwits who the Carling ads are aimed at...
