Japanese War Effort

I’d love to surrender to summer but this year there doesn’t appear to be one to surrender to. However I will surrender to The Japanese War effort, the work of one man named Martin Moog, and the sounds on offer here.

It was not love at first hearing but this collection of songs have grown on me. It is a weird listening experience but then I think that is the effect that Martin Moog wants to achieve. Is it pop? Is it electronic? I cannot say for sure. Like sand on the beach it grips you and refuses to leave you once you have made contact with it.

The title track, 'Surrender to summer' is good but it is ‘Beach buddies' which is haunting and ‘Bucket and spade’ which is a staggered and disorientating sound that leave their mark on me. The album artwork and the song titles are a complete contradiction to the music. It’s like Tim Burton goes to the seaside.

This EP came with a bag of rock sweets but I did not need to be tempted with treats to give this a thumbs up. The sweets remain uneaten. The songs were devoured.
