Black Balloon EP Domino Records

They’ve lost that shock value now they’re part of the celebrity circus (‘Hotel’ with Kate Moss, ‘VV’ as part of the latest Jack White outfit The Dead Weather) but they’re still making credible bluesy pop. ‘Black Balloon’ has the sort of sixth form lyrics that Gerard Way would reject but the tune is naggingly good, not just stuck in a traditional rut but sending your mind reeling with spacepoppy effects for good measure. There’s a Howlin’ Wolf cover on the 10” but we were sent the download tracks recorded in an iTunes session, including the dirty, sexy primitive blues rush of ‘Sour Cherry’ and Alison’s attempt to go all torch singer-y on ‘Crazy’. It’s a nice party piece but she does heartbreak less convincingly than she does the midnight hellion.
