The Ladybug Transistor

Alex Turner’s efforts to get a big orchestral pop sound with The Last Shadow Puppets are better than average but it’s such a direct lift that his record should have opened with the words: “tonight, Matthew, I’m going to be Scott Walker”. For the real deal you’ve got to hear the Ladybug Transistor. They’ve progressed from psychedelic pop to pop classicism, combining Gary Olson’s evocative baritone (now there’s a true heir to Scott Walker) with superb arrangements. From Alisdair (Clientele) Maclean’s gentle surf-rock guitar to Frida Eklund’s crystaline backing vocals and a sax solo plucked straight from the 80s, it’s perfect driving pop music: why Grand Theft Auto hasn’t come calling is the only mystery.
