Mark E Smith might look like a corpse held together by cobwebs these days but his contemporary Robert Lloyd remains in fine fettle, as shown by the latest single from the Nightingales’ No Love Lost album. The latest line up of the band pump out demented mutant rockabilly, while Lloyd growls in his best punk-Elvis style and there’s lovely Fuzzbox-style choruses from Fliss Kitson. The lyrics are barbed and brilliant as ever, dealing with child raising and making some bonkers reference to the antics of Fathers 4 Justice in a weird waltz-time coda. (This download single comes with a cover of Joanna Newsom’s Book of Right On, which sounds intriguing but wasn’t on my review copy.) Lloyd’s always been a Brummie legend but he’s reached the status of national treasure now.
