The Seven Inches
Openness and Honesty EP Indie-MP3 Records

Article written by Ged M - Jun 17, 2009

The Seven Inches have always worn their passionate hearts on their indiepop sleeves and, while the sleeve might be considered a bit zany, what the bytes within contain is seriously wonderful indiepop. ‘Openness and Honesty’ is their friendly manifesto, tumbling over killer melodies, blasts of box-fresh brass and screechy guitar like an expresso-overdosing puppy, and sounding almost perfect for the Indietracks disco. Ian Cockburn sings with a slightly wonky fervour but Emily Clavering can really sing, as if she has the ghost of Amelia Fletcher in her larynx. The 55-second ‘Rowing Song’ sounds as if they’ve overdosed on e-numbers but ‘To Boldly Go’ is a Modern Lovers-style hootenanny of indie guitar-pop, full of fiendish hooks. They’ve been around for years but the heavenly melodies, charming optimism and their unalloyed joy in making pop means this single deserves more than just one listen from your jaded ear ‘oles.
