Boiling Point Great Pop Supplement 7”

This heady immersion into the Technicolor psychedelic world of the 70s could only be more authentic if it came with its own microdot and lava lamp. ‘Boiling Point’ has a driving Krautrock beat, fuzzy guitars and sublime sunshine pop boy/girl vocals – shades of the Free Design – and hypnotises with its metronymic timing. Meanwhile Eff.R is the sort of spooky folk-psych that could grace the Wicker Man soundtrack. However, for sheer strangeness you have to hear ‘This Is Normal’, where Jesse Chandler (Midlake) and Miles Newbold (Natural Yoghurt Band) generate a jazzy groove full of rhythm and wailing as Elijah Wood intones instructions: “do not resist…do not open the box”. Whether or not any substances were consumed in the making of the record, this single absolutely flies.
