While the B-sides are good enough in their own right - the plaintive, girl-sung '1939' and the jingle-jangly, handclappy indiepop of 'Your Favourite Song' - the six-numbers-on-the-national-lottery moment is supplied by the A-side, the stunning 'Cats of Camerford'. Yes, it owes a unpayable debt to Belle & Sebastian but the sweeping arrangements and heartbreaking horns stand it on the doorstep of genius. The sound of young Oxnard, California, it's easy to fall in love with this record and at year-end there's a good chance you'll see it pouting seductively in the singles of the year line-up.
