The Trimdon Grange Explosion: Raider
We’ve almost seen the Trimdon Grange Explosion before – it’s four of the six members of the Eighteenth Day of May (Alison, Mark, Ben and Karl), making a welcome return. ‘Raider’ is a cover of a late 60s tune by singer/songwriter Judy Henske (“queen of the beatniks”) and Jerry Yester (from the Lovin Spoonful). It’s psychedelic folk but the folk element is much more prominent than in previous 18DOM songs. The B-side, and the song that gave them their name, ‘Trimdon Grange Explosion’, is an updating of a heartbreaking ballad by Tommy Armstrong (the “pitman poet”) commemorating a County Durham mining disaster in 1882. This is darker, more melancholic, English folk music. It’s that link between 60s acid-folk and the more traditional songs that people like the Watersons are keeping alive that makes the Trimdon Grange Explosion such a fascinating force and a band to keep tabs on.
