The Vivian Girls: My Love Will Follow Me
If Martin Scorsese ever wants a band to conjure up the sound of New York for his next movie, he shouldn’t overlook the Vivian Girls. On their latest own label single, they have the broken-hearted girl-group sound of the 60s down pat, with all the girls joining in on harmonies and handclaps, and those perfectly evocative Shangri-La-style lines of longing: “I can hardly wait until the summer comes”. On the b-side they cover the Chantels’ 1957 doo-wop hit ‘She’s Gone’, giving it a crepuscular, Spectorish tone. Arlene Smith, the composer of the song, is described as the founder of the girl-group sound; the Vivian Girls keep her torch glowing.
