This Many Boyfriends: Getting A Life With EP
The irreverent indiepop of 'I Don't Like You ('Cos You Don't Like The Pastels)' is clearly tongue-in-cheek but underpinning the funny lyrics is a seriously good song, sounding a little bit like Let’s Wrestle mixed in with a Teenage Fanclub-style solo. This is Skins-style teenpop, probably confusing the over-25s with their boundless effervescence, swaggering enjoyment of life and general don't-give-a-fuckness. 'Trying Is Good' revels in its self-deprecation and is full of quotable lines, like the opening modest claim: “we are not the best/ but we’re far from the worst”, and its hopeful conclusion: “we are your indiepop heroes”. The Leeds fivesome make consistently catchy and jangly tunes; sometimes you're reminded of the cantering clatterpop of Los Campesinos, other times you hear the sound of people annointed with the Smiths-stick: lines from ‘It’s Lethal’ like “I sense the ever present ghost of an English public school” and references to “a child made a man” could have been dictated by Morrissey via an ouija board, ouija board, while the singer sounds like he’s nicked Mozzer's larynx. The band pile on the sensations, from a day-glo cover to the fanzine and badge and sticker set included with the EP, adding to the sense of DIY indie fun but with great tunes too.

A free download of 'I Don't Like You ('Cos You Don't Like The Pastels)' is available from Thee SPC: here
