Tim Cohen’s Magic Trick

Tim Cohen is the Alexei Stakhanov of the music industry. Not content with releasing three full-lengths, one 12” and ten 7” singles since the Fresh and Onlys formed in 2008, he’s found time to release three records under his own name in the same period. And alongside his third album he’s released an additional eight songs on a pair of coloured vinyl 7”s, which almost add up to a further album! Accompanied by a group that includes Alicia Vanden Huevel of Aisler’s Set and James Kim from Kelley Stoltz’s band, Cohen’s material is far more diverse than his Fresh and Onlys songs. ‘Pyramid Scheme’ is choogling rock’n’roll, ‘Rock Bottom’ is like 60s Zombie-fied psych-pop and ‘Doctor Doctor’ is spooked psychedelia with a satisfyingly odd grumbling guitar. ‘I And I Will Be’ ought to be white reggae with a title like that but it’s more like gorgeous orchestrated indiepop a la Ladybug Transistor. On my calculation, he’s released nearly 50 songs since 2009 under his own name and these latest eight are no filler but carefully crafted pop tunes in their own right. Long may the restless record factory in his head keeping turning out these tunes if they’re all as good as these.
