Blimey, the subject matter may be as downbeat as ever, but the Tindersticks have returned sounding positively jaunty. Not that they've ever really stinted on letting pop moments shine throught he gloom.
But here, on both the The Hungry Saw and The Flicker of a Little Girl (which comes off the album rather than the single) they've left a few rough edges on their sixties pop-influenced croon. In doing so they've favoured the shimmy of the rhythm and some winsome woodwind over the more polished delights of a well-turned string arrangement and to great effect (though the Turns We Took, also an album track, redresses the balance more than a little). Suddenly I'm looking forward to the arrival of that copy of the album I ordered all the more.
