Left Myself Behind Heavenly Recordings 12”

So, are Toy one of the next big things of 2012? Sadly, on this lengthy evidence they aren’t. They have a better name than their predecessor band (Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong) but the claims for the new outfit seem inflated. ‘Left Myself Behind’, at just shy of eight minutes, has learned the art of delayed gratification from post-rock. The long and rhythmic guitar groove eventually gets to the pop shot but if it’s influenced by krautrock and psychedelia it’s a pale shadow of both. On the flipside, the dull ‘Clock Chase’ is six minutes of dragging rhythms and synthesiser washes. It just sounds like they want a piece of the Horrors’ action, but the Horrors were keen music students first and well-marketed pop poseurs only second.
