Doin the Popcorn Ska Volume 2 Discotheque Records

Popcorn Ska Vol 2

Having already chucked up efforts from the likes of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Madonna and, er, Jools Holland, the shady people behind the Two Tone / Ska 7" series have moved in a more interesting direction for two sixties popcorn ska EPs, the second of which is looked at here. The four tracks all date from around 1964 and feature American teen/doo wop acts treading their toes in slightly different musical waters. Nothing here will sound anything like an authentic Jamaican recording of the time, but that's not the point, these blue eyed performers had their own quirky appeal, aimed at the European popcorn market.

I Don't Wanna Cry by Steve Alaimo is pleading northern soul given a chirruping shuffle treatment, while girl group The Angels (yes, the ones who brought us the classic My Boyfriend's Back) deliver the fantastic Jamaica Joe, a song that could be second cousin to My Boy Lollipop. Hamilton King brings us a ska version of Bobby Rydell's Diana, while finally Tracey Dey offers the wonderfully catchy Ska-Doo-Dee-Yah.

Four absolute gems that would collectively cost a fair packet to acquire in their original B-side form, I desperately hope there's a Volume 3 along very soon.
