4x12” – Volume 4 Dance To The Radio Records

4 x 12” – Volume 4: Dance To The Radio
The last in a series of 12” EPs from Leeds label Dance To the Radio continues to highlight new bands. Local singer-songwriter Paul Thomas Saunders doesn’t deserve the Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake comparisons yet. There might be an element of Paul Simon in his vocals but his Americana-flavoured ‘Getting Loose With The Obtuse’ is a bit overwhelmed by the full band approach. The Leeds-based ensemble Milk White White Teeth are better local representatives; their communal chamber-pop has a tropicalia topping, with touches of Talking Heads and Kid Creole, in the insane assault that ‘The Calendar Will Crawl’ becomes.

From further afield (Philadelphia) ‘Even Think’ by Drink Up Buttercup is part-operatic, part carnivalesque madness. It reminds me of Fiery Furnaces and Of Montreal where ideas are dragged in and marshalled regardless of genre boundaries. Like an ADD-kid, it’s good at times but exhausting. Irish band Super Extra Bonus Part mix up the styles too for ‘Who Are You and What Do You Want’: electronica, trip hop and Associates-style pop. As the nine-piece band get into their groove, it becomes very seductive.

The 12” series has been a bit patchy and but this is one of the more listenable releases from a label whose quality control is sometimes a bit inconsistent.
