Castle Face Records Presents Group Flex Castle Face Records (book plus 5x flexis)

It’s a good thing that this book and flexi set comes with a free download as it’s an artwork in its own right. Best of all, you can gaze at the multi-coloured hologrammed flexis and their accompanying, inventive pictures at the same time as listening to a set of stunning San Franciscan bands: a pair of unreleased songs from each of Thee Oh Sees (the package is released on John Dwyer’s label), the Fresh and Onlys, Bare Wires, Blasted Canyons and Ty Segall with Mikal Cronin. Bare Wires play snarly garage-rock that has the same sort of feral threat as the early Who, while the Fresh and Onlys never fail to impress with their speeding garage rhythms. The big clanging garage-rock rhythms and the whooshy synth effects of ‘Burning Spear’ by Thee Oh Sees reminds me very much of Pere Ubu circa The Modern Dance while Blasted Canyons are marked by a dark and dramatic strain of glam rock. The glam returns with the best songs in the set, Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin’s takes on David Bowie; ‘Fame’ is slow and tortured glam with plenty of echo while ‘Suffragette City’ is a super-quick, ultra glammed-up version. Not a duffer there and there’s a bonus track from the Devo-like ‘Here Comes The Here Comes’. Packaging and music are both works of art, and well worth the high price if you can still find it.
