The League of Psychedelic Gentlemen EP Fruits de Mer Records 7”

Article written by Ged M - Dec 19, 2012

The EP brings together four veteran psychonauts in the equivalent of one of those Amicus compilation horror movies from the 1970s, each performing their own piece of whimsical English psych with an eerie twist. ‘Rosemary’s Eyes’ by Nick Nicely is a spooky soundtrack to a fright film where you realise that you’re seeing the world through someone else’s vision. The Bevis Frond’s guitar-driven contribution ‘I’m A Stone’ is classic English freakbeat, while the story is straight out of M R James. Anton Barbeau and Three Minute Tease break the mould by being American but their ‘When I Was 46 (In the Year 13)’ fits the English psych archetype with an off-kilter sci-fi horror tale full of unsettling sounds. Finally, Paul Roland, with Robyn Hitchcock guesting on backing vocals, goes for an evocative shiver of spooky psych in his tale of murderous marionettes, ‘The Puppet Master’, proving that any song featuring a burgomaster can only be a gothic horror. This record is as comforting as one of the chillers they show on BBC1 late on a Friday night, utterly retro but an immersive pleasure.
