Weird Dreams
Holding Nails Tough Love Records 7”

Whereas we’ve praised the dreamy qualities of their singles previously, this time Weird Dreams are more direct. ‘Holding Nails’ might sing of “a ticket to nowhere, an aimless desire” but it rides on a summery, Smiths-like shimmery jangle of guitars, patroling the same sort of pastures as Real Estate. It’s perky but we get more kicks from the B-sides; ‘Where’d I Go Wrong’ is spiky, with a post-punk edge, that then wows us with reams of surf-rock guitar while ‘The Stranger’ is a simple, shuffly beat – just acoustic guitar and minimal percussion – but it's melodic, catchy and neat.
