Women’s Hour
Jenni Dirty Bingo Records 7”

The sound of Women’s Hour is so perfectly East London indie, having been recorded by Richard Formby and mastered by Rory “Warm Brains” Atwell, that it’s a surprise to find they’re from Kendal, land of BSP and Wild Beasts. ‘Jenni’ is laidback and dreamy tropical pop, with a neat and angular Afrobeat guitar figure reminiscent of Vampire Weekend. Although you wouldn’t expect it to get much airplay on Radio 4 (its subject is Jenni Murray from the programme from which they took their name) it deserves a wide hearing as it’s a lovely, mist-shrouded single. ‘Human’ is very different, a little witch house-y, where instruments communicate with each other in spare bursts of morse code beneath breathy vocals and propelled by starkly dancey beats. This might not be instantly engaging but be a little patient and you’ll soon want to stay in touch with Fiona Burgess and band.
