Y Niwl
4 Aderyn Papur Records 10”

Article written by Ged M - Oct 5, 2012

The wonderful Y Niwl have produced another six tracks of surf instrumentals. Although Alun Evans confessed to once having a Shadows cassette, there’s clearly more bubbling up from their collective subconscious than they care to credit; the Spotnicks and the Pirates come to mind on ‘Dauddegpedwar’ (‘24’ – as ever, songtitles are numerical) and ‘Undegwar’ (‘19’) respectively, while the reverb-heavy ‘Dauddegpump’ (25) has the tropical warmth of a Shadows song. Best of all is opening track ‘Daudegtri’ (‘23’), propelled by a crazy-sounding garage organ and raked by quickfire guitars, which is guaranteed to wreath your face in smiles.

And that’s the secret of Y Niwl – they make simple surf-rock music that’s easy to love. May their tremolo arms never droop.
