Frivolous Laura
A Lullaby Fat Badger

Article written by Matt H - Apr 9, 2009

Frivolous Laura
Frivolous Laura
Firmly in the line of post-Kate Bush quirky ladies and undoubtedly talented, Frivolous Laura has a neat line in stately piano playing and music box rhythms. This is most successfully employed on the almost straight Tom Waits pastiche, The Workers Song.

Elsewhere though, she sounds like what people who don't like Joanna Newsom or Regina Spektor hear when they listen to them. It's heavy enough on the attempts to be spooky-wooky that you hit the internet to check whether or not it's a parody. (What else are you supposed to do when the phrase "Beware of the goblin..." actually features in a supposed scary lullaby, sung in that overused 'witch-impersonating-a-little-girl' voice? It'd stop a little girl sleeping all right, but through giggling - not fear.) It isn't.

A reining in of the quirk - or alternatively a full-hearted dive into Tiger Lillies-esque Grand Guignol - would make it an awful lot more palatable.
